Paula Beckett, a native of Hartford CT, moved to Virginia in 1989. She attended Tidewater Community College pursuing a degree in Hotel Restaurant Management. She became interested in event planning while attending Tidewater Community College. During her tenure there, Paula was assigned to do a project in English class which was to interview someone less fortunate than she was. She called a homeless shelter (The Dwelling House) and interviewed a young lady. The one thing she wanted conveyed in the interview was that the children blamed themselves for the parent’s homeless status. After sharing the interview Paula asked herself what she could do to help those in need which is when she found out she had a gift for event planning. From that conversation, Mrs. Beckett created and produced fundraisers to benefit some of the local homeless shelters including The Dwelling Place, Judeo Christian Outreach Shelter, and The Samaritan House to name a few. Paula’s most memorable and influential volunteer job was when she was younger. She had an amazing opportunity to work as a camp counselor for children with Down Syndrome. The camp was owned by the Kennedys and still to this day Paula states the experience was one of the most rewarding because those special children don’t care about race, color or religion it’s all about love and being loved. Love is her ultimate favorite word. Paula has also worked with the Caribbean Peoples organization to promote awareness of Domestic Violence. She has worked for Sentara for nearly two decades in a management position.
